Today is going to be a whimsical casual post. I hope you do not mind to indulge me. List of quirky and interesting things I have personally noticed, through the years that a lot of artist have in common:
A Studio Cat, Dog, Bird, or Lizard
Oh, the studio pets! I can't even count how many artists I know (including myself) who have their loyal sidekicks in the studio. Don’t believe me? Just dive into a YouTube search for “artist in the studio,” and you'll be greeted by a parade of fur babies and scaly critters. It’s practically a requirement to have a pet who can keep you company while you create! We all must love our little friends.
Creating Art with a Cause
We artists are driven by more than just splashing colors on canvas. We crave meaning and purpose in our work. While we definitely enjoy creating just for fun, take a peek at art tutorials on YouTube, Twitch, or Patreon, and you'll see this passion for purpose everywhere. Whether we’re saving whales and elephants, making religious or political themed artwork or crafting heartfelt pieces about adoption or deeper themes, it’s evident that we’re on a mission to make a difference with our art!
Presence of ADD, ADHD, Giftedness and/or OCD
Now, I’m no psychologist or health care provider, but I’ve spent plenty of time teaching art to all ages. I’m not saying we’re more special or have mental quirks that set us apart, just that we artists often come with a unique wiring. These traits aren’t negative; in fact, they might just be what makes our creativity flow so much.
Must have Light in our Studios and Homes
Have you ever noticed how obsessed artists are with lighting? I have been to a lot of studio spaces and homes. Besides the obvious reasons to have good lighting, I like to assume that it ties into our love of nature and witnessing the beauty around us.
Anyway, none of this is comes from research papers, text books or any other source, than my personal experiences and observations. Fellow artists, what quirky or interesting commonalities have you noticed in our creative community? Leave it in the comments below! Have a creative, quirky and interesting day! Jennifer
